History and Ecology

With a history stretching back millennia, the springs were once sacred to the Tonkawa tribes. The area later saw unique developments, including tamed buffalo as tourist attractions in the 1840s. Today, the pool is not only a beloved recreational spot but also a vital habitat for the endangered Barton Springs Salamander, a testament to its protected status.
