Casa Neverlandia
A mosaic-clad, hand-built art house with whimsical, sustainable design elements.
The Experience
A Living Canvas of Obsession
Casa Neverlandia is the lifelong passion project of artist James Edward Talbot, a 2,400 sq ft art house, studio, and gallery that began transforming a 1906 bungalow in 1979. Talbot, influenced by a multicultural upbringing and a BA in Architecture, has meticulously layered mosaics, mirrors, ferrocement, stained glass, and found objects to create a whimsical, three-story complex that embodies his "personal growth" and obsession with magic. It's a "living canvas" blending influences from Gaudí, Dr. Seuss, Buckminster Fuller, Tarzan, and Peter Pan into a pantheistic fever dream.
Quirky Marvels and Eco-Consciousness
The house is a testament to obsessive detail, featuring five firepoles (including a 22' backyard descent pole), a 28' truss bridge connecting the master bedroom to a 35' observation tower with stunning views, and four Elemental Altars (Fire, Earth, Air, and an unfinished Water). Other unique elements include talk tubes, harlequin brick floors, a glazed brick chimney, a Serpent Gate, and a finial sculpture connecting to the "sky/universe." Talbot's commitment to sustainability is evident in the 16 solar panels and 11 rainwater barrels, keeping energy usage remarkably low.
A Journey Through Whimsy
Inside, discover distinct rooms like the Bali Room with bamboo stairs and a brass gong, and the "fantasy campsite" master bedroom. The exterior boasts mosaic facades, glass-block porch columns, and street numbers integrated into the retainer wall. Casa Neverlandia is more than a home; it's an immersive art installation that offers a "time-release" awe with hidden depths and shifting viewpoints, inviting visitors to explore its every eccentric corner.
How to Find It
Look for the large brick street numbers set in the stone wall on West Milton Street.
Know Before You Go
Tours are typically hour-long and led by the artist himself. Cameras are welcome, so be ready to capture the unique details. The house is a personal residence, so respectful exploration is key.
