Deep Eddy Pool is a cherished Austin landmark, holding the distinction of being the oldest public swimming pool in Texas. Established in 1915 by A.J. Eilers Sr., it transformed a natural river eddy, enhanced by underground springs, into a concrete swimming destination. Unlike modern pools, Deep Eddy's water is entirely natural, sourced from cold springs that maintain a consistent 68-70°F year-round, offering a bracingly refreshing experience.

The pool features a unique dual design: a 33-yard, 10-lane lap pool for serious swimmers, completely separated from a sprawling one-acre wading pool. This recreational area boasts a zero-depth entry, making it accessible and enjoyable for families and children. The surrounding landscape, with mature trees and grassy lawns, provides a serene backdrop for relaxation.

A Community Staple with Quirky Charm

Beyond its historical significance and natural water, Deep Eddy is known for its community roots and unique quirks. The bathhouse, a WPA project from the Depression era, has been lovingly restored. The pool's name originates from a natural eddy in the Colorado River. Parking is very limited, so arrive early, especially on hot days. The natural spring water is consistently cold (68-70°F), so be prepared for a shock if you're sensitive to cold. The pool's opening time can vary daily as it fills with natural spring water.
