Malin's Fountain Troll
at Pease Park
An 18-foot-tall recycled wood troll sculpture serving as a water protector.
The Experience
A Whimsical Guardian of Water
Nestled within the serene woods of Austin's Pease Park, Malin's Fountain is a captivating 18-foot-tall troll sculpture created by renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo. As Texas's only troll by this globally celebrated 'garbage artist,' Malin is a testament to sustainable art, with over 80% of her structure fashioned from recycled and found materials. Her imposing form is primarily built from Douglas fir salvaged from a deconstructed 1970s University of Texas research tank, with a core of Eastern Red Cedar and intricate details like driftwood strands, expressive ears, and a unique necklace crafted from local ice storm debris.
An Interactive Eco-Message
Malin's purpose extends beyond mere aesthetics; she serves as a 'water protector.' Visitors are encouraged to fill the stone basin she holds with water, a symbolic gesture to share resources with the park's wildlife, such as birds and squirrels, especially during dry spells. A nearby poem beautifully encapsulates this message: 'Sometimes the summer times are dry / Sometimes the sky will cry... / It always makes a difference when / You fill the fountain up again.' This interactive element transforms a visit into a moment of reflection on coexistence with nature.
Discovering Malin
Finding Malin is part of the adventure. She is intentionally situated about 1,200 feet up the wooded Shoal Creek Trail from the Kingsbury Commons parking area, offering a delightful surprise discovery as she blends into the natural surroundings. The journey to reach her, whether by foot or bike, enhances the immersive experience, making her a hidden gem within the urban landscape.
How to Find It
Follow the Shoal Creek Trail north from the Kingsbury Commons parking lot. Look for an 'Art In The Park' sign on your left, then take the trail leading up the hill into the wooded area.
Know Before You Go
Parking is limited; consider walking, biking, or using public transit. The troll is located off a natural trail, so wear appropriate footwear. While free to visit, donations to Pease Park Conservancy are appreciated for maintenance.
