Secret Beach
A hidden sandy cove on the Colorado River with rope swings.
The Experience
A Riverside Escape
Discover Secret Beach, a beloved local spot in Austin that offers a surprising coastal vibe without the long drive to the Gulf. While no longer a true secret, this sandy stretch along the Colorado River provides a unique urban oasis. The journey to this hidden gem is part of the adventure, beginning with a short, unmarked trail that requires a bit of local knowledge to find, starting from the Montopolis Youth Sports Complex.
Family Fun and Natural Beauty
Secret Beach boasts sandy banks perfect for family activities like building sandcastles, collecting shells, and wading in the clear, shallow waters. The riverbed is visible, offering a sense of tranquility. Although official warnings advise against swimming and tubing due to potential sudden floods from upstream dam releases, many visitors enjoy the water, especially in the safer, shallower areas suitable for toddlers. It's a popular spot for dogs to play off-leash, adding to the lively, pet-friendly atmosphere.
How to Find It
Park at the Montopolis Youth Sports Complex. Cross the road and follow the unmarked trail to the right at the park sign fork. Descend the hill to the water.
Know Before You Go
Monitor dam release times, typically around noon, to avoid sudden floods. Be mindful of off-leash dogs. Pack light as the walk back to the car is about 15 minutes.
