Larry Monroe Forever Bridge

A mosaic bridge memorializing an Austin DJ with music, personal quirks, and community art.

The Experience

Artistic, musical, community-focused, nostalgic

A Walkable Mixtape

The Larry Monroe Forever Bridge is more than just a crossing over Blunn Creek in Austin; it's a vibrant, community-built mosaic memorial dedicated to the beloved local radio personality and music scholar, Larry Monroe. For over three decades, Monroe was a passionate advocate for Austin's music scene, championing local artists and eclectic sounds on his radio shows. After his passing in 2014, his enduring influence inspired a unique tribute.

An Obsessive Community Masterpiece

Spearheaded by Monroe's companion, Ave Bonar, and directed by mosaic artist Stefanie Distefano, the project involved over 100 volunteers. Together, they transformed the bridge's low walls into a breathtaking visual mixtape. Hundreds of meticulously crafted ceramic tiles depict elements of Monroe's life and passions: miniature radios, cassette tapes, his signature Segway license plate, and even a 22-foot-long musical score of Townes Van Zandt's "To Live Is to Fly." The mosaic also features vinyl records adorned with the names of artists Monroe loved and played, with daggers marking those who have passed, creating a poignant and deeply personal narrative.

A Living Legacy

Completed in 2015 with support from Austin's Art in Public Places program and private donations, the bridge stands as a testament to Monroe's impact and the power of community art. It's a place where his spirit is kept alive, with fans and musicians gathering annually to celebrate his legacy.
